Dr. Rick McGee and his research team have been following several hundred biomedical PhD students with annual in-depth interviews since they started their degrees until they “find their fit” and differentiate into a variety of careers. Finding a fit occurs at different times for different people; some start the PhD with a career goal and never waiver, but most take much longer often times not until several years of postdoc training. This talk and discussion are designed for graduate students, postdocs and faculty who mentor them. First, It will present some of the findings from their ongoing research with a focus on what factors and preferences lead individuals to pursue different careers. But the primary thrust will be on taking this information and discussing ways trainees and mentors can work together most efficiently and effectively in the journey from training to satisfying career.
